Why Quality Sleep Is Not A Luxury But A Necessity

We all lead such busy lives, we have careers, families, hobbies and so much more. Sometimes 24 hours in the day feels like it isn’t enough time to be productive, let alone get a good night’s sleep, right?

We all need to enjoy a healthy night’s sleep. Our bodies simply won’t survive long term if we are sleep deprived. 

So many of us think sleep is nothing more than a luxury when it should be at the top of your list to ensure a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Getting the standard eight hours of sleep might seem like a pipe dream but let me share with you my top health hacks for quality sleep.

 

Create a morning routine

 

Waking up at the same time each morning will set your day up for success.

Avoid the temptation to press that snooze button. Snoozing does not equal quality sleep, instead, you will wake up feeling groggy and unable to feel fully prepared for the day ahead.

Tip: Need that extra sleep time? Set your alarm for 10 minutes later instead and enjoy that additional 10 minutes of undisturbed sleep.

Avoid trying to play “catch up” on weekends. Believe it or not, oversleeping can also play havoc with your health.

 

Stay active during the day

 

If your job entails sitting at a desk in a dark office, take the time to get outside when you have a chance.

Take your lunch break outside and enjoy some sunshine and fresh air. Your mind and body will thank you for it. Better still, kick off your shoes and walk barefoot on the grass.

 

Enjoy gentle exercise in the evening

 

A walk around the block after dinner and some gentle stretching will help your body relax and prepare for a good night’s sleep. Avoid strenuous activity in the evening as this will spike your metabolism and you’ll find yourself more wired than tired.

 

Create a night-time routine

 

Keep a routine by going to bed at the same time each night. By creating a regular sleep routine, your body will be better synched and prepared for a restful night’s sleep.

 

Disconnect from your devices

 

Switch off all electrical devices for at least one hour (ideally two hours) before bedtime. This includes your computer, TV and mobile phone. Avoid taking your electronic reader to bed with you. By doing so, you will reduce artificial light exposure which can affect your sleep quality.

The blue light emitted from electronic devices is proven to negatively affect your sleep and your wellbeing.

Avoid looking at your phone if you wake up during the night. If you need to use your phone as your alarm, put it out of your arm’s reach. Also, turn your phone to silent and place it facing down.

When you enjoy quality sleep you will notice increased health benefits. You will see a rise in your energy levels and an improvement in your overall health.
